Create a Commercial Domestic-Water Shutoff Map
A usable valve map tells the next technician what a valve actually serves. Build it before a leak, without experimenting on occupied-building systems.
What to do
Collect existing records
Gather plumbing drawings, renovation notes and emergency contacts. Treat old drawings as a starting point rather than proof that the piping is unchanged.
Walk with someone who knows the system
Have authorized staff or a plumber identify accessible domestic isolation points. Photograph each valve and enough surroundings to locate it later.
Record useful details
List valve ID, floor/room, service, fixtures affected, access requirements and the source of the identification. Mark uncertain entries unverified rather than guessing.
Label and review
Use durable tags placed so they do not hide operating instructions or inspection labels. Keep access unobstructed; do not attach tags to sprinkler heads or moving parts.
Validate during planned work
Confirm isolation boundaries only during an approved outage with affected users notified. After work, verify restoration and update the map at the maintenance desk.

Leave a useful maintenance record
Record the exact location, observed condition, time, actions taken, person contacted and follow-up owner. Keep unresolved items visible. A completed checklist means the check was performed; it does not automatically mean the equipment passed or is safe.
