Loose Restroom Grab Bar: Close Access and Repair the Support
A grab bar must support a person, not merely look tight. Movement can come from fasteners, a damaged bracket, failed anchors or missing backing.
What to do
Prevent a fall
Mark the affected fixture unavailable and notify the building lead. A warning on a moving bar alone does not prevent someone from relying on it.
Document the movement
Without loading the bar, record which end moves and whether the wall finish is cracked, wet or displaced. Photograph the model or installation label if accessible.
Identify the installation
Locate manufacturer mounting requirements and wall construction records. A decorative cover can conceal a larger support problem; tightening visible screws may not correct it.
Have the mounting repaired
Assign the repair to someone qualified to verify the backing and mounting system. Replace damaged components with approved equivalents and assess water damage behind the wall if present.
Verify before reopening
Record the installation checks required by the manufacturer and applicable accessibility requirements. Reopen only after the responsible person confirms the mounting is sound.
